Welcome to the latest CD from ex- Wire member and techno artiste Bruce Gilbert. I
was a big fan of Wire and even followed the group into their incarnation as Wir. But
if I had to choose two words to describe this record, one of them would be
"experimental" and the other one would be "ridiculous." Let me spell it out for
you: don't even bother.
The three tracks on this CD are titled "Soli," Bassi," and "Muzi"-- but they might
be better labeled as "radio static," "guitar static," and "more guitar static."
Keep in mind that these three tracks are stretched out over a length of over
55 minutes. I guess if static is your thing, you really get your money's worth.
I read somewhere that Gilbert arranges his music in three parts and has specifically-
equipped vans carrying CD players (one playing each of the parts) drive around
traffic circles. Perhaps, then, Gilbert's music is meant to accompany a highly
complex visual illustration of some kind. Maybe the music is not meant to be judged
alone, without Gilbert's intended visual accompaniment. In any case, I can't figure
it out.
Some day when I get really bored, I'll get a couple of friends together, and we'll
load up our specially- equipped vans and drive around in traffic circles blasting
this CD from each of our speakers. Maybe then I'll learn the secret encrypted in
this drone. But even if the music has some greater message which can only be
experienced through visual stimulation, you're missing that vital part that's
necessary to complete the journey.
