Fun'Da'Mental
Erotic Terrorism
[Beggars Banquet]
Rating: 7.5
If you like the sound of funky big beats mixed with sampled rock guitars,
near- East mysticism, politicized screaming, and clever samples all wrapped
in a package featuring the text of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights laid over photographs of maimed children, then Fun'Da'Mental has a
package for you. As edgy as a quadra- blade Schick, Fun'Da'Mental uses
generally inventive musical means to highlight political injustice. Here,
much of the focus is on the treatment of Palestinians by Israel. While
the politics can fall uncomfortably close to Muzlimgauze extremism,
Fun'Da'Mental have a similar knack for creating compelling music
appropriate to the rage.
The most striking thing about this album is the staggering variety of the
music contained within. "Oh, Lord" sounds like the Bomb Squad meets the
Jeep Beat Collective, "Demonised Soul" comes across like a more
intelligent Prodigy, "Godevil" combines a metal chorus with tribal
percussion, "Ja Sha Taan" is sung like a traditional North African folk
song, "Blood In Transit" consists entirely of sampled belches, vomit
sounds and baby screams, the funky "Repent" sounds like a remix of the
Stone Roses "Fools Gold..." All the way down the line, this is an
insanely difficult album to classify. Which is a good thing.
Most of the lyrics on Erotic Terrorism are rapped/ screamed diatribes
with political themes. And despite that some of the vocals, angry as they are,
have their effectiveness cut by a distinct lack of vocal rhythm, the music
throughout is almost faultless-- extremely groovy beats nicely augmented
by all manner of exotic percussion and Middle East/ North African
touches. Don't forget to pack your anger.
