Cover Art James Brown
Make It Funky:
[Mercury/Chronicles]
Rating: 9.4

To dub James Brown as anything but a legend would be flat out stupid. Jim is the Godfather of Soul, and this is the only compilation I've ever heard that does him justice. Outstanding in every aspect, this double disc set covers everything Brown recorded from 1971-1975. Everything.

While other compilations only feature single-length versions of Brown's songs, Make It Funky puts all the parts together on one track and eliminated the fades, so what you've got is not four different parts of a song, but one long-ass, 13 minute groove.

Some of Brown's best songs are here in their entirety, from "Hot Pants (Parts 1 & 2)," "Get On The Good Foot," "I Got a Bag of My Own," "Papa Don't Take No Mess," and the classic "I Feel Good."

Let's face it. I'd feel good, too, if I made music like this.
