Boymerang
Balance of the Force
[Astralwerks]
Rating: 5.7
The back of the cough syrup bottle says: "May cause drowsiness, may cause sleeplessness." Such wisdom. Modern cough suppressant packaging technology supplying the words necessary for some poor, bearded bastard to write a CD review. Art in motion. Do I make you horny? Do I?
Ahem. Yes. Boymerang may cause drowsiness. Why? It's relatively nuanced, lightweight jungle, that's why. It tempers jungle's raw reputation with ambient overlays, nearly- silent moments and plenty of echo, that's why.
Ahem. Yes. Boymerang may cause sleeplessness. Why? Even though it's lightweight, the hardness of the drum-n- basslines is pure dark-room dance, that's why.
Ahem. Yes. But should you take it before every meal and at bedtime? I think not. Boymerang's odd flavor of moderation places it a listener's no- man's- land, neither sleepless nor drowsy. Balance Of The Force's drive is as hampered by its ambient notions as its mellow quality is marred by unforgiving drumbeats. I wouldn't go so far as to call it bad, but there is far better work to be had, to wit: Amon Tobin's Bricolage and Plug's Drum-N-Bass For Papa. I thought of them myself. I own them. They're better. That's why.
