Tony Bennett
On Holiday
[Columbia]
Rating: 8.8
It's almost genetically impossible to hate Tony Bennett. A smile as big as his heart,
Tony managed to come back to the MTV set, guest on The Simpsons, duet with KD Lang,
do a few commercials, and (probably) nail a few groupies old enough to be his
granddaughters. Gotta love that.
On Holiday is a subdued affair. Rerecording songs made famous by Billie Holiday,
Bennett doesn't show off. That's the orchestra's job, and thanks to them, this album
charts high on my foolproof "Gets You Laid" (GYL) scale. From one to ten, this scores
a big 9.3 on the GYL meter, and that's more important than this percent bullshit that
Pitchfork prides itself on. (Love ya, Ryan!)
My one major complaint with the album is the "duet" between Bennett and Holiday on
"God Save the Child." First of all, I was mad because I always thought this song was
specifically written as the theme from "Roc." Secondly, after Natalie Cole, I can't
take this shit seriously. But enough complaining. Grab your lady, hold her tight,
and get ready to get it on.
