Cover Art Martyn Bennett
Bothy Culture
[Ryko]
Rating: 6.9

We live in an age where the Spice Girls and Oasis are the are the most prominent exports from the somewhat United Kingdom. But Martyn Bennett, a Scotsman with an ear for techno, aims to change all that.

Bennett's latest release, Bothy Culture, blends his Gaelic and Highland roots with progressive dance beats. And on "4 Notes," one can even detect a middle- eastern influence. The repeated strings rhythm suggest an exotic and fantasy- like faraway place.

The first track on the record, "Tongues of Kali," has Bennett blending bagpipes with sitar to create a truly unique hit for the ethno- trendy clubs. The bass is strong, the chorus is catchy, the feet are dancing. The bulk of today's dance singles are typically bass- focused while melody remains thoroughly incidental: Martyn neatly resets this monotony by establishing an interesting balance between the two.

Bothy Culture is a wonderfully successful experiment in cross- culturalizing modern dance music. Bennett mixes extraordinary styles to create a new and exciting sound. To put it simply: It's got a good beat and you can dance to it.
