Swindle
Better Off Dead
[Grilled Cheese/Cargo]
Rating: 5.5
The punk rock tone is set immediately by the band name, no doubt some reference
to the money- grubbing Capitalist pigs ruling our land (some sarcasm necessary).
The music on Swindle's second full- length offering, Better Off Dead, won't
disappoint those disgruntled individuals who insist on obsessing over the sick
socio- political climate of our times. Every song is a balls- out revolt against
pacified, anesthetized moods and attitudes, and Swindle lock on to an adrenalized
groove with the fierce persistence of a wood tick burrowed in your scalp.
Much of the material musters memories of Screeching Weasel's harder moments, circa
Boogadaboogadaboogada in that melodies are present, but the approach is too
harsh to be considered pop- punk. Some songs opt for catchy choruses and singalongs,
whereas others are blinding, breakneck hardcore proclamations.
The album's obvious weak point is its one- dimensional assault, but for fans of pure
and powerful punk, this is cause for celebration. Musicality and versatility are
almost irrelevant in this sub- culture, so the fact that the band charges through
18 bits of high- octane sonic mayhem is strength enough.
Swindle's energy and stamina seem most fitting for a live setting, but until you get
a chance to see them, crank up Better Off Dead and rejoice in the life- giving
juices pulsating throughout your body.
