Cover Art Kelley Deal 6000
Go to the Sugar Altar
[Nice]
Rating: 8.9

The Kelley Deal 6000's record, Go To The Sugar Altar is released, and as one might have guessed, I'm all over it like a Breeder in a Pod.

When we interviewed Kelley Deal on my birthday back in January of 1996, she gave me a demo cassette of the album which I played the hell out of all winter long. The final version sounds better in some ways, though the roughly mixed, lo-fi sounds of the demo were appealing. Most of the vocals are re-recorded and re-mixed for that digital quality sound you can only get from our good friend, the Compact Disc.

"Canyon," the record's opening track and single, is a goodtime rockout that gets me on down and dances with my pants. The asskicking "Sugar," sounds like a classic R&B; song twist-tied with Deal's wacky lyrics. ("Stupid like a wombat.") However, the real humdinger this record puts out is the poppy, and then suddenly etherial, "Head of the Cult."

Even if you're not a Breeders fan, there's something on this record for you. Also, if you're like those Grifters, Dave Shouse is all over the album.
