Pink Noise Test
Plasticized
[Gimme Noise/Interscope]
Rating: 6.5
Well, after repeated listens, Pink Noise Test's opening track, "Girl,
You Can't Tell," still sounds like an older, fuzzed-out Hanson.
And really, that's not so bad because they've taken all the charming things about
Hanson's music (what charming things?) and downgraded them a bit
so they're not quite as annoying. The song is still catchy, happy
and bouncy and it still never leaves your head. Of course, the obvious
difference is that Pink Noise Test are all boys. (Hanson?)
And that's where the comparison ends.
Pulling mostly from '80s brit-pop, though, Plasticized comes off drenched in
reverb and distorted to extremes which is a nice regression for you
kids who grew up with Echo and the Bunnymen. In fact, you might even call these guys
as "classic goth." Songs like "All the Same to Me" and "Dance" sound straight off the
Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy.
After a few listen, it loses its charm a but, but all told, this is band that's hard
to get past liking. With a true modern rock sound we haven't heard in a long time and
music that's instantly appealing, Pink Noise Test have added a new spin to a played-out
genre.
