It's true. I'm not feeling well. After five days of fighting off the bronchitis
that everyone else around me has had, I finally caught the terrible germ and
started aching and coughing up green stuff just two hours ago. By now, it's
escalated into fever and weakness. This is the soundtrack to my immune system's
recent violation. Ladies and gentlemen, if ever electronic music has captured
the feeling of chills, delerium and the bitter cold of Minneapolis in December,
it's this record.
"Well, that's sounds pretty unpleasant," says you. Yeah? It's not really so bad--
especially when you're lying on the couch, wrapped up in a blanket, eyes
closed, spewing mucus. It's a relaxing disease that slowly enters your mind and
erodes all thought. Welcome to the living room floor, where you'll spend the
next three or four days surrounded by used kleenex, sick-smell, and the perils of
daytime television.
One thing that puts me off about this disc is that it can't really decide
what it wants to be. At times it's a bizarre ambient thing, and at other
times, it's loud and scraping. If you're anything like me, you're gonna
be in the mood to hear one or the other. To have both at once, well... it
takes some getting used to.
If nothing else, Sweep clears your head, leading you on a demented journey
through the halls of medicine. 'Cause while it is the encapsulation of illness,
it also soothes the soul, baby. Yeah. You've seen the Pepto-Bismol commercials
where they show the outline of a human body (which is mysteriously grid-like on
the inside) drinking their medicinal liquid and suddenly having a pink-coated
stomach, right? That's what this record reminds me of. And afterward, I've got
to admit, I'm feeling better.
