Short Music for Short People
[Fat Wreck Chords]
Rating: 9.0
"Why can't people understand I got a short attention span?" And with that encapsulating line from Fizzy Bangers, the
mayhem begins. 101 devilishly concise songs all clocking in at the modest rate of 30 seconds or less. With such
stringent restraints, one only has one option-– play hard, play fast, there's no time to muthafuggin' waste!
Lacking sufficient time to execute anything serious, most of the bands resort to outright tomfoolery. Check out Nerf
Herder celebrating their favorite masturbation receptacle or Blink 182 as they melodiously unweave a litany of offensive
words. Some of the bands approach their objective a bit more maturely-– Green Day, Avail, and the Swingin' Utters even
turn in acoustic rockers-– but overall, Short Music for Short People documents non- stop, unbridled chicanery.
Even the ultra- serious Samiam falls prey to these whimsical musings. The bands who seem most capable of employing the 30- second format effectively are the ones who haven't been coerced into
using it-– bands like Black Flag, Descendents, and Circle Jerks who used to utilize the form years ago as a form of protest
against "three minute pop song" conventions. Sure, this comp has a couple of clunkers, but fear not! By the time you're able to press your player's track forward
button, the irritation is already a thing of the past.
Perfect for the early morning commute to work when the deeper strata of your mind still aren't quite functioning and only
the simplest modes of entertainment have any impact. How else can you account for all of those ridiculous radio shows?
When others cite your listening to this album as yet another indication of your A.D.D. ridden character, remind them of
Shakespeare's famous words: "Brevity is the soul of wit."
