Subset
Overpass
[Post Parlo]
Rating: 6.1
"If you won't take me/ Let me know why" is the lyric Subset use to open "Anchor,"
the opening track from their freshly released full-length, Overpass. So,
look, Subset. I'm not sure this is a good idea. No, of course, there's nothing
wrong with you. You're melodic, you're earnest, and you seem like really nice guys.
It's just that I'm looking for something a little different right now. I'll try to
explain.
I appreciate your straightforwardness and all. Really, I do. The thing is, I'm at
a point in my life where I've learned better than to try with guys who write lyrics
like, "When I stared at you, it kind of creeped you out," a line you use in
"Strained." I might as well also mention that the same song begins with you
hesitantly singing, "I try to tell her that I like her." It all just feels a
little too junior high to me. I mean, I understand that you're "strained" and all,
but I've finally gotten to the point where my relationships are no longer plagued
by awkwardness, and I don't necessarily want to be reminded of the old days.
I'm sure after a few beers I could easily find myself rewinding one of your songs
on a mix-tape some not-quite-cool-enough guy made for me. In a soggily sentimental
mood, I might even fall for the moody "Cabin Fever." But I'd feel ashamed the next
morning and just end up hurting you. Yes, I know this sounds harsh, but I'm trying
to be honest, here. You understand, don't you? I mean, you deserve someone who
can fully appreciate what you have to offer-- good pop sensibilities, straightforward
hooks, and abundant sincerity. But the truth is that I like you best when you remind
me of another band, like on "Guaranty" when the cynical lyrics and weary vocals
recall a less capable Jets to Brazil. Honestly, do you want me thinking about
someone else when we're together?
Look, if you're interested, I know some girls who are into Silver Scooter and Jimmy
Eat World. Um, well... actually, I guess I only know boys who like those bands. But
if you're open-minded, I can certainly hook you up. Too soon? I understand. Let
me know if you change your mind. You're right, I am being a snob. I can't help it,
though, and you know we shouldn't be together if I'm going to take this condescending
attitude toward you. I really hope we can stay friends.
