The Oliver Stone Connection
[Hip-O]
Rating: 3.8
It's bad enough that Oliver Stone believes with incredible smugness that he's the
living oracle for all film. But now also we get to hear about it on disc, at
leisure, in our automobiles and family rooms. What is the world coming to?
Next thing you know they'll be selling cigars in penis- shaped cases.
On the opening track, "On Music And Score," Stone pontificates on his
film- school days and ruminates vaguely on the "cinema" and his films.
But what could have been an intriguing insight into a living influence on
pop culture quickly begins to sound like those inescapable conversations
you've accidentally held with Uncle War Story. Stone's throaty ramblings
remind me of my buddy James when he's high-- he just meanders along,
searching endlessly for the words to describe how he feels, never
actually conveying a complete thought.
Stone's numerous ramblings are seperated by music and compositions
from his films. Chances are you've heard these songs before and probably
even own some of them. Among them are staples like Juice Newton's "Queen
of Hearts," Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," Don McLean's "American
Pie" and the Doors' "The End." Such tracks serve to remind us how Stone
loves portentious moments.
But as you may have guessed, The Oliver Stone Connection is only
recommended for the truly Oliver- obsessed and those that find it in
the bargain bins. We will not speak on this again. Good day.
