[Mammoth/Atlantic]
Rating: 9.5

Y'know when ya need to clean your bowl 'cause it's gummed up as hell and you get that black resin shit all over your fingers and everything else? Finally, you get the screen back in and have a smoke. Then, everything happy.

That's how Hot is. When you first splashdown into the CD, ya hit this realization: that people even older than your parents liked music like this. That's a funny kind of resin to get off. Then, you get over it. You accept the images of black- and- white movies and flappers when you listen to it. You realize its unadultered quality and then, everything happy. Hot is exuberant, ginhouse swing without apologies and it rocks without pretense. If you can manage to resist liking it, you must be dead.

My mother has listened to this disc, and likes it. She's 59. I've listened to this disc, and I like it a lot. I'm 26. Now, whenever we drive somewhere in the same car, guess what we listen to when we're not arguing? A good thing.
