The Weekend
[London]
Rating: 7.3

Ladies and Gentlemen, the end of mediocre British music is in sight! (The Coors? Give me a break!) They're called Skinny.

The oddly- juxtaposed "Intro" begins slowly and builds to combine big beats with brash samples and the voice of some heavily- accented radio DJ. Paulie and Matty, the creators of this chaotic sound, have a method to their madness; while The Weekend is awash in noise, there's also some really good music.

"Failure," The Weekend's standout track, features a looped soundbyte repeating, "Why have I always been a failure?" while cool, jazzy drums and heavy basslines create a track that would make Soul Coughing jealous. The sharp music is matched by equally quick lyrics, "You've gone/ Quit me/ Stray dog/ Bit me/ Left hook/ Hit me/ I'm down."

Another highlight is the otherworldly ode to addiction, "Mr. Goodstuff." With its spiritual stylings, Skinny creates an intense-- almost religious-- experience. So, it's hard to decide whether this record is closer to the realm of ambient or acid-jazz. I just know it's good.
