Jamie Myerson
The Listen Project
[Ovum/Ruffhouse/Columbia]
Rating: 7.0
Seems all the important products these days come in all sorts of configurations,
so as to please everybody. For example, it used to be a pretty stressless task
to go to the grocery store for a box of Eggos. Nowadays, you've got your Original
Eggos (these haven't changed at all, I assure you), Fat Free Eggos, Reduced Fat
Eggos, Sugarless Eggos, and I'm sure there are even Eggless Eggos or, like, Tofu
Eggos for the world's growing population of vegans. Hey, I'm not really concerned
with it. I know what I want when I pick up a box of Eggos and it's the original
kind.
If music was a box of Eggos (it's not, but let's just pretend), Jamie Myerson
would be kind of like a reduced- fat, ultra- processed version. 'Cause, like Eggos,
Myerson's flavor of simulated, electronic waffle pads is extra- lite for those
afraid to get heavy.
Having learned neat tricks from the likes of Goldie, u-Ziq and BT, this man
has turned conventional drum-n-bass into something a little more appealing
to thirty- somethings. Bad? Not really. See, now you're making assumptions,
which is never good. Come on for a minute. Dip your foot in the flowing waters
of the bitstream and enter a world ruled by King Tron, where guitars are as
archaic as starting a fire with twigs.
The Listen Project has got that whole pseudo- organic, sexvibe goin' on,
but unlike others in the genre, the New Jersey native keeps it fresh and interesting,
creating sounds that conjure up images of rippling water and retro nebulae.
As one of the first records on the Ovum label (co-owned by Josh Wink), The Listen
Project serves as a sign of things to come. And if future releases sound
anything like this, expect crystals to become the next raver fashion trend.
