Diamond Dave, why did it go so wrong? Back in the day, Van Halen was fronted by a consumate showman who was replaced by an intolerable jackoff who wanted to do lots of shitty ballads. Dave went solo and, for awhile, it was fine. He did his showy EP of covers that gave us "Just a Gigolo." Then, Eat 'Em and Smile. Surely you remember "Yankee Rose," if not for its goofy video, then for its mere existance as the only song to ever couple sexual desire with a national monument. And who could forget "Just Like Paradise" from Skyscraper? When I heard this song on the disc, I freaked, because I forgot how stupidly catchy it was. These three great songs are on a new Best Of disc, along with 21 tracks of shit. Hey, and there's a new song called "Don't Piss Me Off." How's this for a chorus: "Don't piss me off / don't cool me down." Um, okay.
