Cover Art Up, Bustle and Out
Light 'Em Up, Blow 'Em Out
[Ninja Tune]
Rating: 8.2

Up, Bustle and Out are an unusual bunch. They've got one of those bizarre press kits that's so extreme, you can't tell when they're not kidding. But aside from their Hunter S. Thompson-style adventures, they make some wacky-assed music.

Fronted by Senor Rudi, the band's core hails from Bristol, England, though their music has a decidedly spanish and tibetan edge. And what they've accomplished on their most recent effort, Light 'Em Up, Blow 'Em Out, is really pretty astonishing. It's a record that moves unpredictably through various groove terrains. One minute, it's a psychotic jazz number riddled with Hammond organs, the next it's heavy bass, wacked-out rhythms and topped with a juicy layer of sitar and forest noises.

Each of the nine UB&O; members grab the spotlight at various times (a la Wu-Tang) and prove what they put in the mix. And while each of these kids would clearly make fine solo records, it's incredible what they do when they put their heads together.
