Throwing Muses
Limbo
[Rykodisc]
Rating: 7.5
You know, if Kristin Hersh doesn't rock your world, you simply don't deserve the gift of life.
I can never decide which is the best Throwing Muses record, but every time a new one
comes out, I think I've found it. 1994's University was an incredible record,
despite the excess of reverb. Luckily, on Limbo, the Canyon of Echoes is
minimized and you can direct all your attention to the tricky melodies and clever lyrics.
The CD spins through all sorts of musical territory from the catchy pop beat of
"Ruthie's Knocking" to the dark and sludgy, cavernous rhythm of the title track to the
XTC-like twists and turns of "Serene," and every song is led by Hersh's
powerful country-rock vocals. Plus, it's an Enhanced CD, so you've got that whole
interactive thing going on, too. No surprise. Another terrific Throwing Muses album.
