The Bed Is In The Ocean
[Southern]
Rating: 6.7

Things To Do Today:

1. Get up.

2. Spend fifteen minutes staring at wall and sighing heavily.

3. Trudge to kitchen. Pour self bowl of cereal. Realize there is no milk. Leave bowl of cereal on counter for rest of day.

4. Sit on couch, stare at wall, sigh heavily some more. Wonder if maybe I should go to work today. Decide to call in sick again.

5. Decide once again that current job and living situation is not quite painful enough yet to quit job and go back to school.

6. Pay bills.

7. Do laundry.

8. Vaguely satisfied with getting something done, wallow some more in self- pity while lying face down on the floor listening to Karate's The Bed is in the Ocean. Appreciate the band's sparse, deceptively low- key sound, distilled from a mash of leftover Slint and Codeine riffs and sharpened to a fine point. Marvel at their single- minded dedication to plumbing the depths of aimless post- graduate ennui with their precocious lyrics and meandering, almost jazzy guitar lines.

9. Start feeling guilty and frustrated for wallowing so damn much. Get mildly irritated with Geoff Farina for tending to sing the same vocal melody in every song. Wonder why Karate feels the need to continually strike the same angsty chord over and over, even though I'm doing pretty much the same thing lying here on the floor. End up still liking The Bed is in the Ocean, but decide that it's probably not a great idea to listen to it during bouts of depression.

10. Go back to bed.
