Dogon
The Sirius Expeditions
[NewDog/World Domination]
Rating: 6.0
The two members of Dogon met in 1981 at a King Crimson concert, which in itself
says something about the band. They're two guys intent on creating ambient electronic
music with a touch of analog synth. Sound goofy? That's where you're wrong. Their
debut release, The Sirius Expeditions, is anything but.
Focusing on blending tribal rhythm patterns with interstellar nebula music that
fluxuates between moments of deep relaxation and gripping tension. Vocal samples
appear to be very popular with these two, as a couple of Sirius' tracks
are littered with senseless sound clips like "fashion is on our tongues" and
"in the future."
Dogon, while members of the bustling ambient electronic scene, are more heavily
influenced by prog- rock than most bands in the genre. Their average song length
is just over seven minutes, with the title track stretching out over more than
twelve minutes. The music is also remarkably prog, as tinny electronic noises
shoot out of the band's mini- moogs like lasers fired at the stars. In time,
Dogon could prove to be leaders in their genre, but as it stands, The Sirius
Expeditions is somewhat outdated a more than a little pretentious.
