Mix Master Mike
Anti-Theft Device
[Asphodel]
Rating: 4.3
Hip-hop scenester Mix Master Mike has been keeping himself busy. When
not DJing for the Beastie Boys or the turntable collective the Invisibl
Skratch Piklz, he's doing it solo. And Anti-Theft Device, the follow-
up to his 1996 full-length debut is not only inventive, it's danceable.
The tracks are, for the most part, relatively short and packed with samples
from old rap records and b-movies (a few of which have pretty obvious sources).
So, despite the fact that the record spans 31 tracks in just over 60 minutes,
this isn't a record you might lose interest in upon first listen.
Sadly, Anti-Theft Device doesn't hold up very well over repeated
listens. There's not enough musical substance to warrant more than one
spin, and it would fall flat on its face at parties. There's no doubt that
the man's got skillz, though. Perhaps this album has cleared out his
collection of samples so that he can concentrate on rhythm next time out.
