Holland is a former country of the Holy Roman Empire and later the main member of the [Republic of the United Provinces of the Netherlands]? (1579-1795). Currently, the area is divided between two provinces of the Netherlands: Noord-Holland? (northern part) and Zuid-Holland (southern part) that were created in 1840. The name Holland is currently still applied to denote the entire Netherlands.
