Cover Art Trio
Da Da Da: The Best of...
[Chronicles/Mercury]
Rating: 8.0

Thank you very much to Volkswagen for incorporating that odd musical question mark they call Trio's "Da Da Da I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Aha Aha Aha" into their recent commercial. The song is enjoying yet another brief round of airtime on radio stations throughout the world. The disc was released to cash in, of course.

Da Da Da is an actual "best of" collection as opposed to a reissue of their original album. But if this is the best they got, I don't even wanna hear the stuff that didn't make it on. These bizarre songs have extremely sparse production (thanks entirely to Klaus Voormann, whose claim to fame is that he designed the cover art for the Beatles' Revolver album), nerdy, preprogrammed rhythms and more quirk than They Might Be Giants on an all-night cocaine-and-Nintendo marathon.

Weird to the point of surprise, Trio are a living disaster today, just as they were fifteen years ago when this song lived out its unusually short lifespan on the airwaves, never to be played again (even on retro 80's flashback nights on your local adult contemporary stations). At least it's kind of interesting.
