Cover Art Barry Adamson
Moss Side Story
[Mute]
Rating: 8.4

Mr. Cinema-song, Barry Adamson, might have been best known for playing as a member of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds. But almost ten years after this record's release, such nonsense is retarded. Moss Side Story marked an essential moment in the history of art records, and is still considered Adamson's best solo release to date.

Like a soundtrack to a David Lynch film that was never made, this record cruises through the dark and fiery depths of the mind of a visionary, allowing you to try on the fabric of reality before telling you it doesn't come in your size. Creeping through three titled "acts" and a nice three-part piece called "For Your Ears Only," Moss Side Story is one of the eeriest hours you'll ever experience in your life.

Luckily, though, Adamson doesn't have a one-track mind. The album attempts spookiness through other means than just minor-chord orchestration. You've got bizarre horn sections, guitars, and big, loud drums among some very active pieces of adventure and mystery music.

This reissue comes at just the right time. With Adamson's scores for films like Germany's 1991 classic Delusion, 1992's Gas Food Lodging, and most recently, (it was bound to happen) David Lynch's Lost Highway, resurging in popularity, millions of little goth kids and soundtrack aficionados are going to want this in their collection. I know I do.
