Shallow
High Flyin' Kid Stuff
[Zero Hour]
Rating: 8.1
Shallow, practically by themselves, seem to be carrying the shoegazing
legacy into the next millenium. They've been compared to My Bloody
Valentine, and that's no joke. Shallow provide washes of white noise
and distortion, beautiful glimmering melodies and lots of reverb very
similar to their dream-pop heroes. Two of the three band members sport
the last name Shields, a la Kevin.
Is that pushing it? Nope. As far as I know, those are their real names.
Coincedence? You decide.
Perhaps more serene and angelic than MBV, Shallow are no strangers to
crafting a good pop tune themselves. Songs like the opening bliss- sequence,
"Missile Command," the Cure- inspired "You Give Me Butterflies," and the
impossibly wonderful, "Wash, Dry, Fold" are all remarkable signs of
independent talent. Whether Shallow intend to channel the Bloody
spirit eternally is still unknown, but one listen to High Flyin'
Kid Stuff proves that their style could be more than Sheilds - deep.
