 Ananova:
Brazil's Embraer to cut 1,800 jobs as plane deliveries falter

The world's fourth-biggest aircraft maker says it will lay off 1,800 workers.

Embraer is shedding 14% of its staff due to falling demand in the wake of the US terror attacks.

The Brazilian plane maker says no firm orders have been cancelled but this year's jet deliveries have been cut to 160 from 185.

Chief Executive Officer Mauricio Botelho says deliveries will be cut even more in 2002 - to 135 from 205.

Embraer sees revenue reduced by $700 million (around £475 million) in 2001 and by $1.2 billion (£814.5 million) next year compared to earlier estimates.

The cuts come after similar announcements by Embraer's bigger global jet-making rivals Airbus, Boeing and Bombardier.

Earlier this week, Bombardier said it would reduce its work force by 3,500, or 5%, and reduced its growth estimates.

Embraer's preferred shares fell 3.63% to $3.10 in anticipation of a statement regarding job losses.

The stock that earlier this year had been among the best-performing has plunged more than 45% since the September 11 attacks.
