Swissair has announced it's to cut 3,000 jobs. The cuts come in response to the US terrorist attacks. The cuts represent about 10% of the company's worldwide catering staff. Swissair also announced a three-year restructuring plan, concentrating on business travel within Europe while scaling back its flights to North America. The redundancies will hit the company's Gate Gourmet in-flight catering operation, which employs nearly 30,000 people in 34 countries. Last month Swissair Group announced it was cutting 1,250 jobs, or about 1.7% of its worldwide work force, and was eliminating some long-haul flights. The company says it will totally integrate its flagship Swissair operations with its regional carrier Crossair under a new name, Swiss Air Lines, although the two services will maintain their individual identities. Swissair's stock has almost halved in value following the US attacks, and even before that it had lost three-quarters of its value since financial troubles began to be revealed in January. The company been struggling most of this year to recover from a failed business strategy of investing in small foreign airlines. Story filed: 16:37 Monday 24th September 2001
