Midwives from across the UK are gathering to debate the rise in Caesarean births. Famous women who opt for Caesareans rather than natural childbirth and creating the best environment for giving birth will be discussed at the National Conference on Maternity Care in Lichfield, Staffordshire. The conference is focusing on concerns with maternity care in the UK, including the rising incidence of Caesarean sections, low breast feeding rates and dissatisfaction with the experience of giving birth. Among the 200 delegates were representatives from the Royal College of Midwives, health authorities and GPs. Pam Beale of the National Childbirth Trust said: "We are calling for more midwife-led units with a homely environment for women giving birth rather than hi-tech wards where people expect instant pain relief." The one-day conference is organised by Lichfield's Maternity Working Group and the National Childbirth Trust. Victoria Beckham and Mel G, Zoe Ball and Patsy Kensit are among the stars who have opted for a Caesarean birth in recent years. Earlier this year, the Government released £100 million to refurbish and modernise every maternity unit in the country and are recruiting 2,000 more midwives. They are also developing a National Service framework which will set national standards, improve women's choice and put an end to the "postcode lottery".
