Companies lack the female touch |
Women are still fighting for a foothold in the boardroom, according to a new report.
BusinessAge says women are still failing to reach the top jobs, even though they represent half the population and 45% of the workforce.
The report suggests just 4.7% of FTSE 100 company directorial posts are held by women, and there are 47 companies with no female representation on the board.
Among the top 100 companies are no female chairman and just one female chief executive, Marjorie Sardine at Pearson.
BusinessAge cites a report by the International Labour Association: "A few respondents suggested, somewhat lamely, that gender was not a relevant selection criteria.
"In addition, fewer than 5% of the bosses gave what is probably the true answer, that board members oppose the appointment of females to the board."
The report singles out Legal & General for praise, where a quarter of the board is female and one of its directors, Kate Avery, is an executive director.
