First Japanese national confirmed dead in WTC rubble

The first of 22 Japanese nationals missing after two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Centre has been confirmed dead.

The Japanese Consulate General in New York said he was Keiichiro Takahashi, first vice president of Euro Brokers.

The 53-year-old had lived in the United States for more than 10 years with his wife and daughter.

The Japan Times says Mr Takahashi, a native of Tokyo, is believed to have been working on the 84th floor of the centre's South Tower at the time of the attacks.

More than 70 Japanese, mainly relatives and colleagues of missing people, travelled to New York to look for friends and family. More than half have already returned to Japan due to the difficulties involved in finding and identifying bodies.
