'Sick' WTC kamikaze computer game withdrawn

A computer game that had asked players to defend the World Trade Centre from kamikaze pilots has been withdrawn.

The game, titled WTC Defender, had been available to download over the internet.

Players had been invited to score points shooting at kamikaze planes attempting crash into the towers.

The site has now been taken down - but before it was removed its operators had posted a note apologising for any offence caused.

The message read: "Please note - the game was not meant to offend anyone, my deepest condolences to all of you who have lost someone in this tragedy."

News of the game first surfaced after a report by state-run Bulgarian news agency BTA.

The macabre offering was brought to its attention by a Bulgarian internet club that had downloaded the game before it was withdrawn.
