Brown takes tough line on public spending

Chancellor Gordon Brown has told fellow Cabinet ministers the economy faces uncertainty.

Mr Brown says the right policy for the UK is to stick to public spending plans which are still affordable.

He told a specially-convened Cabinet meeting that the UK will not be immune to the downturn in the global economy.

"He acknowledged that we were entering a period of uncertainty in terms of the international situation," the Prime Minister's spokesman said.

"He said several times that we cannot be immune from what is happening in terms of the global economy, but that we would not repeat the mistakes of the past and would not relax our discipline."

Mr Blair brought his Cabinet ministers up to date with the latest military, political, diplomatic and humanitarian developments in the crisis caused by the terrorist atrocities in the United States.

He told them the international coalition of support was strong and that Afghanistan's ruling Taliban regime could choose to hand over bin Laden or "face the consequences".

Mr Blair's spokesman said: "He underlined that the whole process would take time and said that it will be a long haul, but that everyone was determined to get it right."

"Dismantling the apparatus of terror" would be part of the long haul, the spokesman said.

At Downing Street earlier, the Prime Minister called for a "humanitarian coalition" to aid the Afghan people caught up in the crisis - and urged people in Britain to get on with their daily lives.
