Trimble outlines plans to oust Sinn Fein ministers |
Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has outlined his plans to oust Sinn Fein from the Stormont Executive. He says it is an attempt to force the IRA into decommissioning its weapons.
Mr Trimble added there is still time left for republican weapons to be put beyond use before his party tables a motion to exclude Sinn Fein from the cabinet.
But he has warned if the motion is defeated it will be impossible for Ulster Unionist members to remain within the executive.
He added that the terrorist atrocities in the US had "changed the atmosphere" in Northern Ireland, "but they do not actually change the problem that we have".
Mr Trimble, who resigned as first minister three months ago, announced his party's plans last Saturday, saying it would "bring matters to a head".
Speaking in Westminster, he said: "If the motion is defeated then as I have said it would be impossible for us to remain fully within the administration and we will act accordingly. It is not our intention to disrupt or to just cause wilful damage to the administration."
