Ipswich did manager George Burley proud with a sensational Uefa Cup win in Moscow. Burley was a player in the club's halcyon days of the 1970s and 80s, when they had at one point competed in Europe for nine out of 10 seasons. But his 2001 team's achievements are threatening to give him even more pleasure. Ipswich beat Torpedo Moscow 2-1 and won the tie 3-2 on aggregate. Burley said: "I now hope this can be a lift-off for the season." Burley is taking nothing for granted as Ipswich attempt to consolidate their place in the top flight of the English domestic game as well as making a splash in Europe. He said: "The Premier League is very hard. We are working hard to get there. We have shown some very encouraging signs and we have enough quality and belief." Finidi George had volleyed in from close range to swing the tie Ipswich's way just over a minute into the second half at the Luzhniki Stadium. Marcus Stewart kept his nerve to provide a two-goal cushion from the penalty spot in Moscow, before Dmitry Vyazmikin eroded the lead late on. George's fellow summer signing Matteo Sereni then made two outstanding late saves as Town held on, leaving Burley to praise last season's 21-goal forward Stewart. "Marcus has done tremendously well since he came to the club. He sets himself high standards, and any good striker wants to score goals. He's scored virtually 20 every year throughout his career. ''I have a lot of confidence in his scoring ability, and he is also a fantastic team player." Story filed: 07:22 Friday 28th September 2001 RELATED STORIES:
