Police have released photographs of 32 people suspected of being involved in a town's race riots. The pictures - of Asian and white men and youths - were taken from security and CCTV cameras in Burnley on June 24. Other photographs were taken by the police helicopter and officers carrying hand-held video recorders. Superintendent Paul Buschini said: "We would appeal to anyone who recognises the people in these photographs to contact the police as soon as possible. "Anyone who recognises themselves should also come forward. "The residents of Burnley have a vital role to play in this major investigation and I very much hope they will support us by calling in with information." During three days of violence, shops and cars were set on fire and two pubs attacked as more than 200 youths, some wielding baseball bats, clashed in town centre streets. Gangs of white and Asian youths fought and riot police were called to keep them apart. Fifty-five people were arrested during the rioting and 47 people have been arrested since. They have been charged with offences including serious assault, violent disorder, possession of offensive weapons and criminal damage. Anyone who recognises a person in the photographs is asked to contact a confidential telephone number on 01282 472222 from Friday. Story filed: 20:17 Thursday 20th September 2001
