Millionaire winner threatens legal action

An Army major at the centre of a police inquiry into an edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is threatening legal action.

Major Charles Ingram won £1 million on the ITV show and is now threatening to sue the programme's producers.

Scotland Yard's special inquiry team were called in because the producers noticed suspicious coughing after filming, The Sun reports.

ITV and Celador Productions have confirmed police are investigating apparent irregularities relating to an episode of the show and say the programme will not be transmitted until the inquiries are completed.

Major Ingram, 38, from Easterton, near Upavon, Wiltshire, is threatening to take Celador to court for "destroying his reputation".

In a statement released through his solicitors Morgan Cole, he denied cheating and challenged the company to produce evidence against him.

It said: "He is stunned, bewildered and devastated at the action that has been taken and feels that the effects leave his career in the Army and livelihood in tatters.

"In the circumstances, Mr Ingram has stated that he will do all in his power to fully protect his legal position and restore his reputation within the Army, his family and friends.

"Mr Ingram, a major in the Engineers, is known to be of impeccable character."

The solicitors say that proceedings will be started against Celador if the company fails to produce any evidence against him by 4pm on Friday.
