Court bars six from Ardoyne school protests

A court has banned six men from taking part in loyalist protests at a North Belfast girls' primary school.

Belfast Magistrates Court ordered the men to stay away from the protests and the Holy Cross School in Ardoyne.

All six were charged with unlawfully fighting and making an affray on September 3.

That was the day the protests resumed when the children returned to school after the summer holidays.

All six were remanded on bail of £400 until November 15.

The accused are Jim Potts, 37, unemployed of Dover Street, Belfast; Christopher Johnston, 18, of Glenbrook Gardens, Belfast; Gary Harris, 18, unemployed of Shankhill Terrace, Belfast; David Cunningham, 35, unemployed of Wheatfield Drive, Belfast; Amin Ul Haq Khan, 33, unemployed of Ardoyne Road, Belfast and Stephen Bell, 40, unemployed of Ardoyne Road.

Bell alone was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon, a golf club.

The restrictions on Potts and Bell, who work in the offices of the Concerned Residents of Upper Ardoyne, allow them movements between home and office.

A 17-year-old facing the affray charge is due to appear before a juvenile court next Wednesday.

The protests at the school continued today as the Catholic children were taken to class by their parents. There was jeering and whistle-blowing as they ran the gauntlet behind a heavy police and Army presence.
