US synagogues step up security sooner than usual |
Synagogues across the US are stepping up their security sooner than usual as they prepare for the High Holy Days, beginning on Monday.
Many Jewish congregations activate special safety plans during the 10-day period which starts with Rosh Hashanah and ends with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
These plans are already being implemented after the terrorist attacks on Washington and New York.
According to the New York Post, Rabbi Eric Yoffie, leader of the Reform movement's Union of American Hebrew Congregations, advised its 900 member synagogues to lock their doors and windows and set up patrols.
He also told members to contact their local police for advice on improving their levels of security.
