Crowds are gathering in Manhattan writing messages hoping to find loved ones missing since the destruction of the World Trade Centre. An impromptu memorial is starting to take shape in Union Square Park. People are leaving notes and lighting candles. One piece of paper says if whoever did this is so mighty, why is he hiding? This is just one of the hundreds of messages left on rolls of poster paper. One organiser calls them "bandages for the soul" taped to the ground, as a memorial for the victims of the World Trade Centre attacks. It is about 30 blocks north of the complex and started on Tuesday afternoon with two pieces of paper laid down by Jordan Schuster, student at New York University. He says: "This could help people by giving people an outlet, a place to express their emotions." A man earlier came with a giant candle sculpture that has become a centrepiece for the memorial. The eight-foot-tall silver sculpture bears the inscription, "To the Victims of the Terrorists' Attacks." All around it were votive candles, bouquets of flowers and small American flags.
