A collection of women's stories outlining experiences involving female genitalia.

REVIEW:

First performed off-Broadway featuring an all-star cast including Winona Ryder, Glenn Close and Whoopi Goldberg, The Vagina Monologues is Eve Ensler’s award-winning tribute to the power, wisdom, strength, energy and humour of womanhood, expressed through a series of lusty, poignant, outrageous and daring stories.

Ensler takes her inspiration from a series of interviews with women from all walks of life and cultures, including a Bosnian refugee and a Long Island antique dealer. The result is a compilation of tales which lay bare the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about the vagina.

The show is educational too - learn all the grisly facts about female circumcision, or muse a while on what clothes or accessories a vagina might wear: specticles perhaps? Stories include such favourites as The Flood, Hair, and If Your Vagina Could Talk, What Would It Say?.

EVE ENSLER (director) won the 1997 Obie Award for The Vagina Monologues, and was also nominated for the Drama Desk and Helen Hayes awards. The off-Broadway premiere of the play attracted some of Hollywood’s biggest names including Winona Ryder, Glenn Close and Whoopi Goldberg.

JERRY HALL (actor) made her name as a fashion model, beginning to strut the catwalks aged just 15, and gradually establishing herself as one of the most familiar faces of her generation. She made her West End splash in 1989 in Bus Stop and recently returned to London to play Mrs Robinson in The Graduate.

JOSETTE SIMON (actor) was nominated as Best Actress at the 1989 Genie Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Oscars) for her performance in Milk And Honey. She made her film debut just two years earlier, playing Dr Ramphele in Richard Attenborough’s acclaimed biopic Cry Freedom, headlining Denzel Washington and Kevin Kline.

JENNY ECLAIR (actor) emerged as one of Britain’s most popular and outspoken comediennes during the ‘90s, gaining a considerable following. In the run up to her appearance in The Vagina Monologues, she has been appearing as part of the Edinburgh And Beyond FHM Comedy Tour.
