US public wants curbs on in-car mobiles

A US road safety survey has found overwhelming support for restrictions on the use of mobile phones in cars.

It found 76% of the population in favour of new legislation.

The issue was among the most commonly raised in its general survey aimed at cutting a rising death toll on the roads.

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety - an alliance of consumer, health and safety, insurance and law enforcement groups - says there were almost 42,000 deaths on US highways last year. That equates to 100 deaths each day.

Their poll, conduced by Harris, also found public backing for state laws requiring young children to be restrained in vehicles and new measures to improve safety at intersections.
