Readers still coming to terms with US terror attacks

Ananova: Millions of people worldwide saw the tragic events in the US unfold live on television. How do you feel in the aftermath of events in New York, Washington and Pittsburgh?

Travis Welk: As a university student in the US who has just returned from studying in London, I want to express the incredible gratitude and feelings of support from the special relationship the United States shares with Britain.

The playing of our national anthem at Buckingham Palace was a beautiful display of concern from your wonderful country. I want it to be clear that these touching acts of support and your nation's strong commitment to helping us in this time of need will never be forgotten. I send my most sincere thanks to all of Britain.

John Enger: Tuesday's atrocities have united the whole world, joining opinion of traditional enemies into a focused desire to rid the world of such barbarism.

Such unity could ultimately bring something positive out of the terrible carnage. I would like to see the Islamic nations not only condemn this act, but to denounce the perpetrators of this and other terrorist acts as murderers.

For the most respected Muslim clerics to tell the world that these people never have been and never will be martyrs and condemn them as criminals to eternal damnation.

Further, I would like to see the growing global unity transcend the normal divisions and result in a committed, sustained and overwhelming offensive against all forms of terrorism throughout the world.

Symbolic alliances between ancient adversaries should be built, to strive to make the world a better place for all humanity.

Nate Peck: This is a horrible thing and I agree whoever committed this act should be severely punished. However, for those people who are harassing and attacking US and UK Muslims, you're no better than the people who ruined New York.

Hatred is what started this mess, so now you go along and commit hate crimes. Real smart!

Janet Morrow: This atrocity has shown me that the world is indeed a smaller place in the 21st century. When we see the death of ordinary people, the pain is not only felt by relatives of those involved but is experienced by those around the world.

JS: For years the US has financed and armed the world's terrorists. It was only a matter of time before they were attacked. The attack on the US targets cannot be condoned by any right-minded person but a military response is not the answer.

Vernon Keighley: I would just like to say how disgusted I am at this pointless and barbaric attack on innocent civilians. As an ex-serviceman, I know how people must be feeling. I lost a lot of friends when an IRA bomb blew up a bandstand in London.

Jenni Fleming: Words cannot adequately express the shock and disgust at what has happened. Some say it is world war three. Whether it is or not, these barbarians must be stopped. Religion, organised or otherwise, has a lot to answer for.

Emma Falango: I think it's very sickening that anybody could do such a thing. I am very touched by this awful event. There is no punishment bad enough for these types of people and I hope they are caught.

Chris Dsouza: This is to all the groups who have organised this ghastly act. You all think that in Allah's name you have conducted jihad. If you all consider yourselves so close to Allah, why don't you ask Allah whether you have done the right thing and is Allah going to give you refuge in the next life and peace of mind in this life.

I am sure the rest of the world think that you are following instructions from a leader or leaders who are followers of Satan.

Julian Agnew: What a way to begin a new millennium, a time when so much hope and expectation should have prevailed. We live in a world that is going to present us with more problems and issues that will seriously test our ability and resources to exist but we have to turn our efforts to stop killing each other.

I'm so horrified and saddened by the events of Tuesday and accept that we have to respond. I just hope that we do so without having to resort to wanton killing of human beings who are caught up in a struggle that they want no part of. Whatever action President Bush and his government and their allies take must be measured and responsible. Sadly, any form of retribution against the guilty ones will never make up for the deaths of all the innocents on Tuesday.

John Hansen: This is an awful tragedy. To imply that 'ordinary Americans' do not mourn the loss of life in other areas of the world shows complete ignorance.

This event has brought the fear of terrorism much closer to us all as unfortunately all the events unfolded on live television for us all to see. Terrorism is not just about car bombs and bomb scares, but is escalating towards the potential for nuclear and chemical attacks on cities throughout the world.

This kind of terror can only be fought with force as words achieve nothing with those who have such a callous disregard of all human life.

Oliver Bahner: I don't think that we (the western world) could ever find a punishment suitable for these attacks. I think the best punishment would be to turn the other cheek and let those responsible live with their sin.

Guy Harris: Retribution and revenge do seem justified. But the point this misses is that we as a species are failing to understand each other. Let this be the start of 'The New Dialogue'.

Brian Coward: I have just driven my usual 15 miles to work. Every flag I have passed is raised at half-mast (hotels, supermarkets, offices). I feel choked this morning.
