Colin Powell sends message to Taliban

US Secretary of State Colin Powell says innocent people are being killed by those providing a haven to people like Osama bin Laden.

He says anyone providing support to organisations such as those headed by bin Laden are attacking civilisation and killing innocent people.

He says his message to the Taliban is the same one he would send to any other regime in any other country.

Bin Laden has sought refuge in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.

Mr Powell says it has not been definitely confirmed bin Laden is behind the acts of terrorism against the US, but a lot of information has been gathered.

Messages of support from countries around the world were welcomed by Mr Powell.

Even Syria had sent a "very strong letter of support" to President Bush and Mr Powell said he would pursue the letter to "see where that takes us".

He says the events of September 11 have fundamentally changed the way people look at terrorism.

He describes the enemy as being hidden and not one that can simply be defined in time and space and then confronted.

"The enemy is in different places, the enemy is hidden, quite often it is right here in our own country," he said.
