It
all started with the merger of two groups, Professional Race Organizers (PRO)
and SPEEDZONE where
the new
group called PRO
SPEED was to organize professional drag racing in the country.
The first “dry run” race of the group was held
last June 18, 2000 at
the Greenfield Business Park
in Sta Rosa, Laguna with about
ten (10) car entries
participating and about fifty spectators watching the race.
The first big
break came
when PRO SPEED
was able
to get the special events contract with Buena Vista International for the
movie premier of “Gone in 60 Seconds” last August 2000.
Promotions of the drag racing event called “Drag War 2000” was
handled by the sponsor radio station 94.7 Mellow Touch which ran a series of
radio plug-ins and also invited the
guests in the opening remarks of the actual movie premier of “Gone in 60
Seconds” held at the Glorietta 4 cinema.
PRO
SPEED’s “Drag War 2000” ran its first event on August 12, 2000
with seventy five (75) car entries
participating and about two hundred (200) spectators enduring the scorching heat
just to watch the action-packed races. At only its initial run, PRO SPEED
was able to break the seventy (70) car-entry record of the other drag race
organizers. It was covered by television network sports programs like ABS
CBN’s “Sports Umlimited” and GMA’s
“Gameplan”.
Since
then, PRO SPEED organized the
“Quarter Mile 2000” series which ran once a month with the help of sponsors
like Automotive Engine Rebuilders, Shell Velocity, Shell Helix, Magic 89.9, 88.3
City Lite, 99.5 RT, 103.5 K-Lite, Nodalo’s
Headers, and AutoIndustriya.com. Setting a new level of standard on its own, “Quarter
Mile 2000” now boasts a new record of one hundred twenty (120) car entries
with spectators reaching about six hundred (600) who stay on to watch the races
until the wee hours of the morning. This event is now also covered by RPN News 9 wherever our races are held whether this be in Subic, Clark
or at the Manila Harbour Centre.
All
“Quarter Mile” Drag Races follows the safety rules and regulations
prescribed by F.I.A. ( Federation International De Automobile), the world
governing body for all motorsports events under the strict supervision of the
Philippine Motor Association (PMA) under which PRO SPEED is
affiliated as a motorsports organizer.
