In
this age of electronic gadgets and fuel injection, its a breath of fresh air to see an
example of "age old" drag racing technology applied so cleanly and pleasantly as
it is here. Meet "The Yellow JEEPSTER". Powered by the ever popular Toyota 2T, this potent little mill has been bored
out to displace almost 1800cc's. Rotating in the head, pushing larger than normal valves,
is a rather large cam of undisclosed specification (like we're
surprised...). Spent gasses exit in to the atmosphere via custom
headers, with an estimated 1 5/8" primary pipes, gathered in to one collector.
Now, those pieces mentioned before may sound pretty "run
of the mill". Maybe so. But the powerplant isn't what makes this quarter mile missle
different. It's the workmanship of the owner and builder, Tony Llames.
Just look at the "one piece" chassis and hand made
control arms in the front and a four link in the rear! Coil over shocks with oil
reservoirs, built for motorcycles, are used at all four corners. The front control arms
are of "Formula car" quality (ok, they're not F-1 quality,
but maybe Formula Ford circa 1980). Watching this jeepster take off
at the line, shows that those suspension pieces work as good as they look. Fluid movement
on extension upon launching, then a steady and controlled "settling" when power
is slowly released. Shod with 15" Mickey Thompson slicks, this little fiberglass (yes,
you read it correctly) jeep really hooks. Just magical!
The cockpit is spartan when compared to race cars nowadays,
but includes all the guages that give its driver, Ping Diaz, all the necessary information
he needs.
Under the hood, no detail has been overlooked. From the hand
built fan shroud, which REALLY works in cooling its powerplant (don't
even think of delay tactics, this puppy WON'T overheat at the line!)
to the bracket that holds the extended radiator hoses, everything is at the right place
doing exactly what it should.
You'll also notice that the engine is located about a foot
towards the rear. This certainly has something to do with its prowess at the line.
The Yellow Jeepster has run a best ET of 13.4
secs., despite its modest powerplant. It uses light weight and good
suspension geometry along with weight distribution as its main weapons in batlle. Add in
the attention to detail in its craftmanship, realiability is also in the arsenal. This
makes this little jeepster a true quartermile contender, worhty of being DRP's
