SEARCH TIPS

CNN's site search is designed to be simple and easy for our users. If you don't find your search term right away, use these tips to try to narrow your search.

  • The more words you type in, the more specific the results will be.
  • Put dashes between phrases that you want to find. For example, if you're searching for the specific phrase Surgeon General, type in Surgeon-General.
  • Always double-check your spelling if no results are returned.
  • Use the "sort results by relevance" link at the top of the search page to pull up older articles that may be more relevant to the search query.

HELP

  • Only documents containing all of the words in the query will be returned. If you are looking for a very specific item, type in several words that will definitely be included in that document. For example, if you're looking for articles on marriage tax, type in both "marriage" and "tax". If you're looking for something less specific, just type in "tax" and you'll get more matches.
  • Search results are returned sorted by date first, ranked by relevance within a particular day. If your search is not time or date-sensitive, try clicking on the link that says "sort results by relevance" to pull up older documents that may be more relevant.
  • Search by using phrases. Use the "-" key to group a set of words together as a phrase, such as "high-blood-pressure". This will only match words that appear next to each other in the order that you type them. Separate multiple phrases or proper names with a space, such as "Bill-Clinton, Trent-Lott".
