PJ Harvey Is This Desire?

Though she hasn’t lost her nervy edge, Harvey has tempered her haunted and haunting post-punk take on blues into a rich and brooding musical landscape that’s inhabited by the same demons who lurk in Nick Cave’s neck of the woods. The gruff urgency of Joy twists with a blend of longing and irony that recalls Cave’s opus, From Her to Eternity. The more earnest yearning of A Perfect Day Elise is reminiscent of U2 in its Rattle & Hum days, only Harvey shrewdly eschews the bombast that beleaguered Bono and company. Harvey ultimately answers her own musical question with the unclouded passion we’ve come to expect from her.
