The Valley Film Festival
August 1-8
California’s San Fernando Valley, home to film studios and movie stars,
now has its own festival. The dates for this inaugural event coincide
with the Valley’s area code (818); each night is dedicated to a particular
genre, including, of course, Valley-centric fare.

Edinburgh International Film Festival
August 12-26
Now in its 55th year, Edinburgh is the oldest continually running festival
in the world. This summer, films from over 40 countries will fight for
the prizes recently garnered by Amorres Perros and Billy Elliot.

Sarajevo Film Festival
August 17-25
Started during the war in 1995, this Balkan film fest is now a thriving
international event. Last year’s line up included Dancer in the Dark,
In the Mood for Love, and Yi Yi.

Chicago Underground Film Festival
August 18-24
The fest showcases “underground” films that defy the mainstream through
radical experiments with form, technique and content.

Montreal World Film Festival
August 23-September 3
Filmmakers from as far as New Zealand and as near as the States will compete
for the prestigious Grand Prix des Ameriques award. Previous entries include

International Venice Film Festival
August 29-September 8
Nearly 100,000 celebrities, fans, and vacationers are expected at this
European showcase, which opens with the drama Dust, starring Joseph

Telluride Film Festival
August 31-September 3
Previously, this no-frills Labor Day weekend bash in the Colorado Rockies
has premiered Quills, Sling Blade, and Breaking the Waves.

Deauville Festival of American Film
August 31-September 9
This beach-front gala in Normandy has long been a barometer of stateside
cinematic success. In between screenings, guests can settle in at the
glam French casino.

Grapevine Film Festival
September 6-9
After pouring in $4 million to renovate the age-old Palace Theatre, the town of Grapevine, Texas, is set to host its inaugural festival. The Lone Star-themed movie slate includes Bonnie and Clyde, Tender Mercies, and Born on the Fourth of July (along with what they call more “edgy” indie films shown in another venue). Since this event is held in conjunction with the town’s annual wine festival, GrapeFest, expect some tasty local Chardonnays and Merlots (sure beats popcorn).

Toronto International Film Festival
September 6-15
Think of the Toronto festival as the Cannes of North America. (After all, American Beauty premiered here.) This year’s lineup includes a “Nordic Visions” program of 15 Scandinavian films.

New York Film Festival
September 28-October 14
Every year, the NYFF team travels to Cannes and returns with souvenirs like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Dancer in the Dark, and All About My Mother. All of the glitz and glamour of this festival is open to the public, but star-studded events come with a price tag--the opening-night gala at Manhattan’s Tavern on the Green will set you back $2,500.
