SKOOT DRIVE CHAIN

The designers of Skoot made the decision to use a single gear set at 5:1 pedal to wheel ratio (about 52" gearing in cycle terms). The drive chain remains constantly in tension, even when packed away as the rear A frame revolves around the hollow pedal shaft (this uses four roller bearings).

Therefore, Skoot is virtually maintenance free with no gear cables, levers or adjusters. The rider can achieve a comfortable 20kph (15mph) ideal for city riding and reasonable hills can be pedalled up with ease. Millions of traditional bikes in Holland, China and India have a single gear for this reason and it provides Skoot with trouble-free city cruising.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT

Skoot has a full size adult cycle frame inside it, with the correct rake angle geometry for good handling qualities. This was the starting point for the design concept. It has pneumatic tyres, rubber rear suspension, adjustable front/rear brakes and rugged polymer fairings.

CONSTRUCTION

Skoot is a radically different patented design solution to conventional folding cycles. It has integral mouldings which totally enclose all working parts when packed away and the wheels stay in line resulting in a super slim case (only 140mm). Conventional folding cycles have a central hinge where the wheels fold next to each other, doubling the width creating a bulky package, and a separate floppy case has to be slid over the frame and handlebars and then zipped up.

Skoot has none of these problems and is designed to transform into an inconspicuous case in about 30 seconds. The chain is enclosed completely to protect the user's clothing, ideal for commuters in business suits.

The Skoot construction is a composite of lightweight chrome molybdenum steel tubing and ABS mouldings, with precision machined aluminium/stainless steel parts. The glass reinforced nylon wheels can take an impact load of 230Kg so they are very strong, with roller ball bearing races.

Front and Rear lights are included in the standard specification, with reflectors on the wheels, pedals and rear fairing which conform to statutory regulations.

The main frame is designed to carry a Skoot Business Case within, whilst it is being ridden. Skoot packs away into its own fairings whilst standing upright and is then ready for carrying or pulling along on its large diameter roller wheels.

It has a heavy duty acrylic fabric 'soft top' cover, for use when stored or being carried. Skoot's slim dimensions are 138mm x 569mm x 797mm, weighing only 14.8Kg. Skoot has successfully passed the British Standards test procedure for strength, performance and safety to BS6102/1. This includes shock loads to the front forks & frame, fatigue tests to handlebars & pedals and braking distance tests in dry and wet weather.

ACCOMMODATING DIFFERENT SIZE RIDERS

The full size adult frame geometry allows the saddle to be lowered right down at the back for very short riders. When fully up, it provides for a 38" inside leg height. This is high enough for riders over 1.9m (6'4"). Skoot can be used by riders up to 100Kg (16 stone) in weight.

MAINTENANCE

Maintenance on Skoot is similar to an ordinary cycle. There are no gears to maintain (the item that goes wrong most frequently on ordinary bikes), brake blocks and wheel rims are easily replaced by the owner or a local service centre. Spares are available directly from the manufacturer. Batteries for the standard lights are easily replaced and technical details can be found of all maintenance procedures in the "Skoot Operational and Maintenance Manual" supplied with every Skoot.
